King Richard the LionHEART
bY jOSH dELANEY 6TH GRADE
King Richard was born on September 8, 1157 in Oxford, England and died on April 6, 1199 in Fontevraud Abbey, France. In this time he would become the people's hero and increase England’s borders. Throughout his life he would be favoured by his mother over his brothers, and was never suspected to claim the throne of England. Though he was born in England, he spent much of his life living in France.
From an Early age he showed extraordinary talent in both politics and military tactics. As an adult he stood six feet four inches, and spent only six months of his ten year reign in England, claiming it was always “cold and raining.” At the beginning of the third crusade, he sold titles, land, and positions to anyone who had enough coin in their pocket, and was interested, in an effort to raise money for an expedition to the ‘Holy Land.’ While fighting the Arabians in the Middle East, he married Princess Berengaria of Navarre, who he was long engaged to. When his army came within miles of Jerusalem, he turned around and sailed home, but not all was well and he was soon captured by Duke Leopold and was turned over to Emperor Henry VI after being held at Durnstein. He would spend his remaining years defending his territories in France. He would later be buried next to his father at the Fontevraud Abbey near Chinon and Saumur, France.
