Presents sitting under the tree. Outside, it’s cold as cold could be, drinking hot chocolate by the fire listening to the soft, calm voices of the choir. Kids waiting for Santa to come all not glum. Morning comes and everyone awakes, bracing to start the give and take. People from around the world celebrate. Wrappings on the floor wrappings everywhere, wrappings galore! Family is still here, it’s time to eat, time for potatoes and meat. The day is over, time to leave, till next Christmas and Christmas eve.
Christmas around the globe by Mercedes Briggs 7th grade
Have you ever thought about how people celebrate Christmas in other countries? Do they have big feasts and open presents? This is how people in other countries celebrate Christmas.
Germany: In Germany the Advent is a big part of their Christmas celebration, Advent means ‘coming’ in Latin. Christmas trees are also very important in Germany. If kids live in the house the mother secretly decorates the Christmas tree. Instead of exchanging christmas presents on Christmas Day, people exchange presents on Christmas Eve. Children in Germany write to ‘das Christkind’ asking for presents, then the letters are put into an envelope and the envelope get decorated with glued sugar so they are pretty to look at. There are also Sternsingers, people who go door to door singing for money to go to charity.
China: In China most people don’t know very much about Christmas. That is because about one percent of people are Christians, therefore Christmas is really only celebrated in the big cities. In these cities there are Christmas Trees and other decorations on the streets, in homes, and in stores. In China Santa Claus is called ’Shen Dan Lao Ren’. There are not very many people who have Christmas Trees, if they do the trees are plastic and are decorated with paper chains, paper lanterns, and paper flowers.
Australia: Christmas in Australia comes near the beginning of the summer. People decorate their houses and gardens with Christmas lights and trees. Sometimes neighbors have light competitions, a street in Sydney make money off their pre-organised light display. People in Australia also decorate their houses with a ‘Christmas Bush’, a native Australian tree. According my sources when Santa gets to Australia he lets the reindeer rest and uses kangaroos to deliver presents, and he changes into not so hot clothes.
